April 22, ..... i was asked to repost this and will also update again.....
a brief but fun update on Christopher Williford.....
Friday April 19, was another day of excitement with nurses and doctors staying on their toes as Christopher would lose oxygen rapidly and then rebound quickly. After an accidental find on a chest CT, the doctors ordered a thyroid biopsy and he underwent anesthesia one more time, only to find he has the most rare occurrence of the yeast infection going to his thyroid. Since that time, he has made an incredible rebound..... he is focused now, his mind is clearing and he is improving by leaps and bounds.....
it all started Saturday morning at 4:00 am when he sang a hoarse happy birthday to me..... WHAT A GIFT!!!!
April 29th, ....
Christopher continues to improve daily while still at Children's Hospital in Boston.
After 26 brutal days .....where Christopher has persevered through the depths of darkness, he has emerged today with an official day 1 of engraftment. To do this he needed to reach a specific number in his counts of neutrophils in his blood.
We have had teams of doctors following him due to complications from chemo, radiation, infection and mostly the artillery of meds which require a hearty kidney and liver working at maximum effort. With a yeast infection that was found in the blood, a virus in the bladder, and the worst mucositis that is possible, it has been a painful journey. With these meds, we also reached a toxic level as the kidneys were not receiving the fluids, and he found 22 excess pounds of fluids all throughout his body. Infectious disease, Neurology, Pain team and some ICU doctors have followed Christopher's progress. With the build up of pain meds, he has had mental confusion and hallucination.

We are now on day (-1) where day zero is the transplant day.
We are being slowly indoctrinated and learning our way through the Transplant phase......
- our days are numbered by negatives and then after transplant, we start + 1 + 2 etc.... to forever I guess.....i am imagining day +2782......
-While I would choose a more likely term....such as Hell Week or something of that nature, they call it Conditioning. hmmmmm, okay
-The side effects are quite uncomfortable to mention but some of the names takes the edge off... such as emesis...
